Best solar panels in India: choose the series, not just the brand

Why the series matters more than the brand, five panel series compared, and what to check before you buy.

Every panel looks alike from a distance, but not every model is built the same.

Quick answer

No single solar panel is best for every home: pick a reliable brand, then the right series within it. Two panels from the same brand can perform very differently over 25 years, so match the series to your roof, energy use and budget.

Key takeaways

  • Judge a panel on 25+ years of performance, not wattage alone.
  • Prefer anti-soiling glass and a low annual degradation rate.
  • Compare each series’ warranty terms and inverter compatibility.
  • Ask how many systems your installer has fitted with that series.

Choosing a solar panel: the simple rule

Almost everyone knows someone who installed solar panels and suddenly became a self-proclaimed expert. They’ll tell you which brand is “the best”, how fast the system pays back and why you should install solar immediately.

Smile. Listen. But don’t make your buying decision based on opinions alone.

Choosing the best solar panels in India means understanding brands, panel series and long-term performance, not just price. At Path to Green Homes, we’ve analysed leading manufacturers and their product lines to help homeowners make informed decisions. When you buy solar panels, your job is surprisingly simple:

  1. Choose the right brand

Like a car company, a brand may be excellent overall.

  2. Choose the right series

Within that brand, not every model is built the same.

Entry-level and premium panels can differ significantly in efficiency, durability and long-term reliability.

Gold-standard solar panels: what defines them

Top-tier solar panels are not just about high wattage numbers. They are engineered for 25+ years of real-world performance. Key characteristics include:

  • Weather protection

Strong protection against wind, heat and hail.

  • Better glass

    Anti-soiling (dust-shedding), anti-reflective glass for higher output.

  • Slow ageing

Low annual degradation (output lost each year) for long-term savings.

  • Safety standards

High electrical and fire safety standards.

When paired with quality installation and proper maintenance, these panels deliver stable, low-cost energy for decades.

Five solar panel series you can trust

Below are proven solar panel series where homeowners rarely go wrong, and where each one fits best. Makers rename and update their series often, so confirm the exact series on your quote.

Brand and seriesWhy it’s reliable
LONGi Hi-MO 5 (Bifacial)Excellent efficiency; imports face customs duty in India
Vikram Solar Prexos 10 (Bifacial)Strong bill of materials; Indian cell plant planned
First Solar Series 6Premium US thin film, built mainly for utility scale
Waaree Elite / Aditya SeriesStrong Indian brand with good after-sales support
RenewSys Deserv SeriesBalanced pricing and consistent performance

LONGi – Hi-MO 5 (Bifacial)

LONGi is a global solar leader known for high-efficiency monocrystalline (single-crystal silicon) panels. Its Hi-MO 5 bifacial series, which also makes power from light reaching its back, delivers excellent output.

But India has charged Basic Customs Duty on imported solar panels since April 2022. Government rooftop schemes also require panels and cells made in India. So Hi-MO 5 is currently less accessible for residential rooftop projects.

Best for: commercial or select residential use where available.

Vikram Solar – Prexos 10 (Bifacial)

Vikram Solar is a Kolkata-based manufacturer with a strong reputation in India. Its Prexos 10 series uses a solid bill of materials (the parts and materials a panel is built from). The company also plans to add solar cell manufacturing at its new module plant in Gangaikondan, Tamil Nadu.

Best for: Indian homes seeking reliability and domestic manufacturing support.

First Solar – Series 6

First Solar, a US-based manufacturer, produces high-quality panels primarily for utility-scale projects. In our view, its Series 6 panels are generally not ideal for residential rooftops.

The reason is roof space. First Solar’s datasheet lists efficiency of up to 18.3%, while the top Indian models on our listing reach 21.5–23.7%. On a small home roof, that means fewer kilowatts.

Path to Green Homes is actively evaluating solutions to make these panels more suitable for homes in the future.

Best for: large-scale installations, not typical residences.

Brand and series: why the series matters more

Many homeowners make the mistake of choosing a brand name without checking the panel series. Two panels from the same brand can perform very differently over 25 years. Always evaluate:

  • Efficiency and degradation rate. Efficiency is the share of sunlight a panel turns into electricity.
  • Warranty terms. Check what each covers, and for how long.
  • Compatibility with your inverter. Panels and inverter must be matched, so ask your installer to confirm the pairing.
  • Installer experience with that series. Ask how many systems they have fitted with it.

Tip: get the series in writing

Ask for the exact panel series and model on your quote, not just the brand name. Then check that series against the four points above before you sign.

Before you buy: match the series to your home

There is no single “best” solar panel for everyone. The right choice depends on:

  • Your roof size. It limits how many panels you can fit.
  • Energy consumption. It sets the system size you need; estimate it with our solar calculator.
  • Budget. Weigh price against efficiency and warranty.
  • Local installation conditions. Wind, heat and shade, for example.

A well-matched panel series will always outperform a poorly chosen premium brand.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the best solar panel brand in India?

No single panel is best for every home. Choose a reliable brand, then the right series within it. Match that series to your roof size, energy use, budget and local conditions.

Why does the panel series matter more than the brand?

A brand may be excellent overall, but not every model is built the same. Entry-level and premium series can differ in efficiency, durability and long-term reliability. Two panels from one brand can perform very differently over 25 years.

What should I check before buying solar panels?

Check efficiency (the share of sunlight turned into electricity) and the degradation rate (the output lost each year). Then compare warranty terms, compatibility with your inverter, and your installer’s experience with that series.

Are First Solar panels suitable for home rooftops?

Generally not, in our view. First Solar’s Series 6 is made mainly for utility-scale projects. Its datasheet lists efficiency (the share of sunlight turned into electricity) of up to 18.3%. Top Indian models on our listing reach 21.5–23.7%, so a small roof yields fewer kilowatts.
